Charcoal toothpaste is marketed as a natural whitener, but the evidence and safety picture is mixed. Here is what the science says.
Charcoal toothpaste may remove some surface stains, making teeth look slightly brighter, but it does not truly whiten the tooth and can be abrasive. Over time, abrasion can wear enamel and actually make teeth look more yellow by exposing the layer beneath. Most charcoal pastes also lack fluoride. Professional whitening is safer and more effective.
Does it whiten?
It can lift surface stains but cannot change the natural colour of the tooth like professional whitening does. The effect is limited and temporary.
The risks
- Abrasiveness can wear enamel with regular use.
- Worn enamel reveals the yellow dentine beneath.
- Many charcoal pastes lack cavity-protecting fluoride.
