Recovery after a dental implant is usually smoother than people expect. Knowing what is normal at each stage helps you heal quickly and protect your new implant.
Most people return to normal activities the day after implant surgery. Soreness and swelling peak in the first two to three days and settle within a week. Soft foods, gentle cleaning and avoiding smoking help healing. The implant then fuses with the bone over two to four months before the final crown is fitted.
First 48 hours
- Some swelling and mild soreness, controlled with pain relief and cold compresses.
- Eat soft, cool foods and avoid the surgical site.
- Do not smoke, use straws, or rinse forcefully.
Days 3 to 7
- Swelling subsides and comfort improves daily.
- Begin gentle salt-water rinses; keep the area clean.
- Most people are back to routine, eating a wider soft diet.
Weeks 2 to 12+
The gum heals and the implant quietly fuses with the bone (osseointegration). You eat normally on the other side while this happens. Once healed, the final crown is fitted.
