Tooth Extraction Aftercare: A Simple Recovery Guide

Tooth Extraction Aftercare: A Simple Recovery Guide - The Tooth Studio, aesthetic dental clinic in Kukatpally, Hyderabad

Good aftercare is what makes a tooth extraction heal quickly and comfortably. Follow these simple steps and most people are back to normal within a few days.

Quick answer

After an extraction, bite gently on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes, rest for the day, and use cold compresses for swelling. Eat soft, cool foods and avoid straws, smoking, and rinsing hard for 24 hours so the clot can form. Mild soreness for two to three days is normal and settles with prescribed medication.

The first 24 hours

  • Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to stop bleeding.
  • Rest and keep your head slightly raised.
  • Use a cold compress on the cheek to limit swelling.
  • Do not rinse forcefully, use a straw, or smoke - this can dislodge the clot and cause dry socket.

What to eat

Stick to soft, cool foods like yoghurt, khichdi, mashed potato, smoothies (by spoon, not straw) and soups that are not too hot. Chew on the opposite side.

Keeping it clean

From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water a few times a day, and brush carefully avoiding the socket. Keep regular brushing elsewhere.

Suction from a straw can dislodge the protective blood clot, leading to a painful dry socket. Avoid straws, smoking and forceful rinsing for 24 hours.

Call your dentist if there is heavy bleeding, severe pain after day three, increasing swelling, or fever, as these can signal a complication.
