Brushing seems simple, but technique matters more than effort. Brushing well twice a day is the foundation of healthy teeth and gums.
Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the brush at 45 degrees to the gumline and use small, gentle circular strokes, covering all surfaces. Do not scrub hard, do not rush, and spit but do not rinse heavily so fluoride stays on the teeth. Replace your brush every three months.
The right technique
- Hold the brush at 45 degrees to the gumline.
- Use small, gentle circular strokes.
- Cover outer, inner and chewing surfaces.
- Brush the tongue and spit; avoid rinsing heavily.
Common mistakes
- Brushing too hard, causing gum recession.
- Rushing (less than two minutes).
- Using a hard brush or an old, frayed one.
