"Root canal" is probably the most feared phrase in dentistry — and the most misunderstood. The reputation comes from a time before modern anaesthesia and instruments. Today, a root canal is the treatment that ends your pain, not one that causes it.
A modern root canal is not painful. It is performed under effective local anaesthesia, so you feel pressure but not pain — similar to having a filling. At The Tooth Studio most root canals are completed in a single sitting and relieve the toothache you came in with.
Why a tooth needs a root canal
Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected — causing that throbbing, lingering ache, sensitivity to hot and cold, or swelling. A root canal removes the infected pulp, disinfects the canals and seals the tooth, saving it from extraction.
What the appointment is actually like
- The area is fully numbed, so you stay comfortable throughout.
- Using gentle, modern rotary instruments, the infected tissue is removed and the canals cleaned.
- The tooth is sealed, and a crown is usually placed to protect it.
- Most cases are finished in a single visit.
Does it hurt afterwards?
Mild tenderness for a day or two is normal and settles with simple pain relief. This is far less than the pain of the infection itself. Saving your natural tooth is almost always better than losing it.
