When gum disease has progressed beyond a regular cleaning, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is needed to stop it and let the gums heal.
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths the tooth roots so gums can reattach. It treats gum disease (periodontitis) and is done under local anaesthesia for comfort. It is more thorough than a routine cleaning and may be done over one or two visits.
Why it's needed
In gum disease, tartar builds below the gumline, causing pockets that trap bacteria. A regular cleaning cannot reach these; a deep clean does.
What to expect
- Local anaesthesia for comfort.
- Possible mild soreness and sensitivity afterward.
- Improved gum health and reduced bleeding over the following weeks.
